During the 1990s, the then MD Foods - now Arla Foods - had a very successful product series called MD Feta. Feta cheese is originally a Greek cheese made from goat or sheep's milk. Since 2007, the word "fat" has also been a so-called protected designation of origin (PDO) within the EU. Only cheeses produced in certain regions of Greece or Macedonia may be called "feta".
But MD Foods was proactive and foresaw the problem. Skriptor was contacted and the name Apetina was developed as a brand for MD Foods feta-like cheese. Apetina was launched in 2002. When the protection for "feta" came into force in 2007, the Apetina brand was already incorporated as a feta-type cheese and loaded with positive values, and the word "feta" could be removed from the Apetina labels. Today, Apetina is one of Arla Foods' most important brands and is sold in more than 40 countries worldwide.
